Weekend Update

What a weekend! It has been a busy but a blessed time altogether. San Antonio is hosting the 2007 Southern Baptist of Texas convention at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center starting tonight. However on Saturday, several churches from around the San Antonio area were hosting community wide block parties and events as a mass evangelism project. I attended the party on Guadalupe Street in downtown San Antonio. It was held in the Community Plaza between two Catholic Churches. It was an amazing experience seeing the churches work together by providing free food like tacos, gorditas, popcorn, snow cones, funnel cakes, etc (I gained 5 lbs these past 34 days!). They also provided live entertainment from a mariachi group called "Campana De America" and there was also a concert given by a 1960's oldie but goodie "Rene-Rene." All entertainers were Christian and gave their testimonies to over 1000 people throughout the day. By the end of the block party, 66 people received Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior! I have not yet received the total amount of salvation's per every block party, but will release that information once it is given. That Saturday evening I went to a "Pre-Convention" rally to hear a long time friend of my family preach, evangelist Sammy Fuentes. There were about 500 in attendance from surrounding Baptist churches in the area. That evening, 7 people gave their lives to Jesus Christ! This morning (Sunday), I was invited to preach at Mighty Fortress Christian Fellowship for their pre-rally and building campaign. It was a tremendous blessing to encourage our brothers and sisters in the Lord as they prepare to start building their new worship center in July. Let us be in prayer for them as they launch out in this exciting time in the life of their church. I have to say that this weekend really changed my heart and challenged my spirit. When I was downtown and saw 66 people saved, it watered the seeds of evangelism in me once again! It put a spark and a fire back into my life like never before. Not that the fire ever left me, it just got bigger this weekend! Brothers and sisters of FCOH, we have a community that has yet to be impacted in the way I know that we can impact it. Let us desire the fire of evangelism and passion for discipleship to burn like never before in the life of our church! As VBS is approaching, let's not make this yet "another thing" for the kids, but let's make this a MAJOR EVANGELISM push to the community. Let us make it a point that we see follow-up as crucial for anyone who attends VBS as well as our church services. If the world won't come to us, then let us go to them! Let us pray for our brothers and sisters here in San Antonio and for the work that is being done to the glory of God. Tomorrow I will be attending some conferences and hearing some more preaching, so please be in prayer for my wife, my daughter and myself as we hear from the Lord this week and as we prepare to return to Houston.
Until Next Time- Pastor Sammy
